These are a few of my...

favourite things.

Things that make me happy.
Things that I love.
Things that I'd love to own.
Things that I do own.
Things that I enjoy.
Things that I enjoy doing.

Things that resonate with my sense of aesthetics.

Beautiful kimonos circa 1930s-1950s via.

If you'd like to create a post about your favourite things,
feel free to link to it in the comments.  I'd love to know
what lovely things inspire and motivate you to create... xo

lei li la loo

Today, I turn Thirty-five!  WOW.  Ha?
It's a rather grey and gloomy sort of birthday day.
Typical for early June (and the beginning of Winter).
We're planning to brave the miserable cold front
and take a little trip into town, though. Yay!

I thought I'd write about this lovely maker's blog today,
my very first Etsy discovery and my birthday gift to you...

The white rabbit, or rather... very cute and colourful bunny...
that I followed into the wonderland of Etsy.

You can visit the LeiLiLaLoo shop here.

A beautiful place to find inspiration
and glimpse an artist and mother at work.
If you're feeling grey, visiting this blog
is just like dancing in a rainbow ♥

High Five

Sneaky is more like a tiger cub than a house cat.

And she thinks Ari is a tiger cub too, I think.

The two of them spend hours playing together.

Ari's double bed is a beautiful old deco piece I picked up for a
song, many years ago. My first bed when I moved out of home.

His sheets are from Ikea. The print is a graphic version of Ikat.

'Orange Pussycats' is an old work of mine from art school days.

Let's Weave!

I've been loving all the Bauhaus textiles that have been flooding pattern
Pin Boards of Pinterest lately. It's had me contemplating the fine art of

A tapestry by Max Pfeiffer Watenphul, 1921

...weaving!

I've not done much weaving before. And what I have done, has always
been done on make-shift, homemade contraptions. Well, last week I
happened upon a large free-standing tapestry loom, just sitting
by the side of the road... like it was waiting for me!

It's been pretty dismal and grey here lately. The kind of weather that's
pretty much perfect for a bit of finger-warming craftwork.
Oh, I can't wait to try my new loom out!

Do you fancy a spot of weaving? Do you have a loom?
There's a wonderful tutorial here for a DIY tapestry loom ↓

So okay... let's weave!

At the moment I am loving... these textile designs by Hilde Reindl,
these beautiful vintage-inspired handmade clothes from Fleur + Dot
and the many beautiful children's rooms pinned here, here and here.

This week has just up and flown away. And what a busy one it was!

You can read a little bit about my week here...  if you so fancy. xoxo

Gunta Stölzl

Have you been to see The Mad Square yet?
It finishes this Sunday.

Hurry down to the NGV before you miss out!

Do you know the work of Gunta Stölzl?

Her use of colour is exquisite. And her working drawings are equally
as beautiful as her finished textiles. I love preliminary work often as
much, if not more, than the final piece. It has a certain energy about it.

It was a pleasure to see her paintings in the flesh.

You can view more of her work at this site
and the above book is available here from Amazon.

You might like this book too.

The Mad Square focusses on Modernity in German art from 1910-37.

Expressionism. Bauhaus. Dada. Constructivism. New Objectivity.
Metropolis and what the National Socialist Party termed Degenerate Art
and confiscated, stole, burnt or sold abroad. It's a fascinating show
...and not one to be missed, so better get your skates on!

Oh and Happy Autumn to my
fellow Southern Hemispherians.

Goodbye Summer! It's been swell :)

At the moment I am loving these muted colours, the repetition of pattern
(as in crochet and patchwork), anthropomorphic images &  natural linens.

Oh dear! Another Friday came and went without a 'favourite things' list.
Perhaps this needs to be a more random post feature on my blog.... xox

The Night Owl

It's a public holiday tomorrow (...err today)

There's no need to wake early or rush about anywhere. And
Ari's in holiday mode at the moment. He'll most probably sleep
in for a bit.  So I've been burning the midnight oil once again.

Two large folksy owl cushions in need of some stitching

It is in the early morning hours, when all is at rest, that my head buzzes
with ideas. When finally, I have time to completely focus on my art and
immerse myself in my work, the studio becomes quite a hive of activity.

I've been playing around with colours & patterns tonight/this morning.

I find that I am moving away from the gelati brights of the 60s and 70s
and toward a more muted, off-beat palette. I've been looking at 30s and
40s designs lately. Dada, Bauhaus, Art Deco, Depression Era, Wartime...
these eras are beginning to influence my craft making as well as my art.

This is the current view from a tidy corner of my worktable

And I do love the way form, shapes and geometric pattern
are used in the designs of those eras. So inspiring.

Later on today, whilst much of Australia celebrates 'Invasion Day', we
plan to head on over to Artplay & try our hand at stop motion animation.

It sounds like it should be fun! Take a peek here.
